This Zaptel Tutorial provides a set of step-by-step instructions for configuring Zaptel and OpenZAP using sample configurations.

What hardware is in your system?

You likely know what cards are in your system because you probably put them there. In this example, the system has a TDM400P (analog card with 2 FXO and 2 FXS ports) and a TE405P (QuadSpan T-1 card). If you don't know what cards are in your system, you can always try lspci from the CLI.

Configure Zaptel

The OpenZAP wiki page recommends a specific version of Zaptel, but I wanted something more recent. I originally tried the latest and greatest source in the 1.4 Zaptel branch but encountered problems. To work around these problems, I used a specific revision (4630) of Zaptel that I had successfully used in the past. Follow the instructions below to checkout and build the same revision that I used.

sudo make config

It is time to modify /etc/zaptel.conf after Zaptel is successfully built. This step tells the Zaptel drivers about channels in the system. In this particular configuration example, I have 92 ISDN b-channels, 4 ISDN d-channels, 2 FXS channels, and 2 FXO channels. My ISDN channels are configured for back-to-back usage and I have spans 1 & 3 connected to spans 2 & 4, respectively using a cross connect cable. Below is my /etc/zaptel.conf file. If you don't have a TE405P and just want to configure analog channels just ignore the ISDN span blocks and subtract 96 from the fxs/fxo channel numbers.

Load Zaptel Drivers

You are ready to load the Zaptel drivers for your hardware. This example requires drivers for the TE405P (wct4xxp) and TDM400P (wctdm). NOTE: This example configuration tutorial will ignore the TE405P channels from this point forward. A subsequent example will incorporate the use of these channels. If you don't want to load TE405P drivers, ignore the wct4xxp line.

Checkout and build FreeSWITCH

NOTE: If you don't have autoconf installed, install it. (for example: sudo apt-get install autoconf)

Perform the Subversion checkout of FreeSWITCH and make sure you modify modules.conf to ensure that mod_openzap is built. You may also want to review the quick and dirty install and/or the FreeSWITCH Installation Guide

NOTE: Edit ~/freeswitch/modules.conf and uncomment "../../libs/openzap/mod_openzap"

Configure OpenZAP

There are 3 files related to OpenZAP that need to be reviewed and potentially modified. This example makes changes to 2 of the 3 OpenZAP files. In addition to the 3 OpenZAP files, the /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/autoload_configs/modules.conf.xml file can be modified to make the mod_openzap module load when FreeSWITCH starts up. If you don't make this change you will need to manually load mod_openzap from the FreeSWITCH CLI via 'load mod_openzap'

To make mod_openzap load automatically when FreeSWITCH starts, open /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/autoload_configs/modules.conf.xml with your favorite editor and uncomment: <load module="mod_openzap"/>

Now you are ready to review and optionally modify the general OpenZAP configuration options in the /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/zt.conf file. I used the default options and made no changes. The contents of this file are below.

Time to configure the OpenZAP channels that you would like to use in FreeSWITCH. Remember, in this example we are ignoring the first 96 channels because we are only configuring the FXO and FXS channels. Modify /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/openzap.conf for your configuration. My file contents are below. If you ignored the ISDN channel configuration steps in above sections, subtract 96 from the fxs-channel and fxs-channel lines below.

NOTE: I had some help (thanks raulfragoso!) in the friendly #openzap IRC channel and learned that the span context syntax is:

         the bold characters are literals
         <type> ::= { pika | wanpipe | zt | <etc...> } // Type of Hardware
         <id> ::= an optional identifier that must be matched in the openzap.conf.xml file

And now we modify /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/autoload_configs/openzap.conf.xml. Remember, if you used the optional <id> in the previous file, you must match that identifier in this file. I swiped my file contents from another FreeSWITCH wiki example

Simple Dialplan

Bridging FXS <--> FXO channels enables you to make and receive calls. The first 2 ports on the analog card are FXS ports so we plug the 2500 telephone set into one of these (I'm using port 2). The third and fourth ports are FXO ports so we plug the line from the CO into one (I'm using port 3). Below is the contents of my /usr/local/freeswitch/conf/dialplan/default.xml file:
