Installing on various platforms

CentOS

Install Git from RPM

yum -y install gcc gcc-c++ make gettext-devel expat-devel curl-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel bzip2 readline-devel libpcap-devel git.<arch>

Where '<arch>' is your machine's architecture. For example, 'git.i386 | git.i686 | git.x86_64'. centOS–distro yum package install of git appears to satisfy all the FS project requirements without the need for above cited extra escape-to-googlecode steps. This yum install also pulls any git dependencies, if any.

To see what CentOS distro has for your machine and its <arch>, look for the return from,

yum search git

Install Git from source

Here's in short how you can install Git from source on your CentOS machine:

cd /usr/local/src
yum -y install gcc gcc-c++ make gettext-devel expat-devel curl-devel zlib-devel openssl-devel bzip2 readline-devel libpcap-devel

Locate the latest stable version of the git tar ball on google code (http://code.google.com/p/git-core/) , and then....

wget http://git-core.googlecode.com/files/<insert_current_version_here>.tar.gz
tar xzvf <insert_current_version_here>.tar.gz
cd <insert_current_version_here>
make prefix=/usr/local all
make prefix=/usr/local install

Debian / Ubuntu

Just get the package, like this:

apt-get install git-core

FreeBSD

pkg_add -r git

Mac OS X

Install the latest version of Apple XCode (you'll need it anyway !) ... it comes with Git.

Windows

You should check Clone on Windows
